Calligraphy Workshop: Tradition, Technique, and Expression

Speaker

Mariyah Modan

Join us for an immersive Arabic calligraphy workshop led by artist Mariyah Modan. This session will introduce participants to the rich traditions and techniques of Arabic calligraphy. Regarded as a central artistic form in the Middle East, calligraphy blends visual art with cultural practice, intertwining language, spirituality, discipline, and creative expression. Historically, it has served as a bridge between knowledge, beauty, and identity, making it a powerful medium for learning and cross-cultural exchange.

The workshop features a student-centered presentation covering the historical foundations of calligraphy, its artistic traditions, and essential techniques. Each participant will receive a customized practice sheet to learn basic handwriting strokes and create a finished piece to take home. All materials will be provided, including calligraphy markers, bamboo qalams, traditionally prepared silk-and-ink dilution, andcardstock paper. Supplies are available for up to 25 attendees.

This event is part of DUMESC's Commemorating 240 Years of U.S.–Moroccan Friendship, honoring a shared history of cultural dialogue, diplomacy, and artistic exchange.
